Moishe Rosen, the founder of the organization Jews for Jesus, often asked a simple question when leading others to find their purpose:
“If you had everything at your disposal answer these two questions:
- If I had ___________________________
- I would ___________________________
This is your dream.”
Take a moment to contemplate these two questions; don’t dismiss them. Did excuses already start going through your head for why your dreams can’t flourish: “I’m not gifted enough.” “I don’t know where to start.” “I have limited resources.” “I’m too broken.”
I included these excuses because I’ve used them all. Often I’ve listen to these soul-wounding words as swords against the dreams and plans God has for my life. Make no mistake God has plans for you and me. He champions us so we will realize those dreams and live out His audacious plan for us.
Last month I wrote about God’s inspiration to write a book and speak on the topic of the importance of our story and how it can be used in mentoring relationships. For several years I dreamed about writing. But life was busy and the excuses listed above relentlessly nagged at me. I would have answered Moishe Rosen’s questions this way:
- If I had: Time, support, and healing
- I would: Encourage women to embrace their stories and use them to inspire others.
After moving I knew it was time to live out this dream because God was calling me to it. My husband Ed regularly encouraged me to live out my dream. In the new found quiet of my day a plan formulated on how this could happen. One day as I prayed for God’s leading there were three words that He brought to mind as a road map to lead me on this journey:
Pray, Pursue, and Persist
Pray: “Pray constantly.” 1 Thessalonians 5: 17 (The Voice)
What a simple encouragement from scripture! Two simple words motivate us to stay in contact with God our Father. Prayer is our way to stay connected with Him and His will.
Pursue: “So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.” Romans 14:19 (NIV)
Paul prompts us to pursue the things that will build up others in their faith. I had varying experiences with Christ-believing women who thought they were too ordinary to impact God’s kingdom. God continued to light a passion in my heart to show women they are not inconsequential, they matter to God, and He desires to have them live out an inspiring life that points others to Jesus. I prayed and pursued God’s leading in how He would have me encourage others in this way.
Persist: “And to the rest of you, brothers and sisters, never grow tired of doing good.” 2 Thessalonians 3: 13 (The Voice)
God cares so much about our Christ-centered dreams and plans that He encourages us to not give up or grow tired of doing good. The fact that He would give such encouragement tells us that the potential is there for discouragement and struggle.
So what do we do? We go back to the beginning and pray and seek His direction to pursue His purpose for us so we may persist in His calling on our lives.
These three words have encouraged me and given me direction as I live out the dreams of my heart to live out God’s unique plan for me. The truly inspiring thing about these three words:
THEY’RE FOR ALL OF US!
Stop believing the lies and excuses that are keeping you from living out God’s plan for your life. Pray and seek out His pursuits for how He is calling you to live. Rest in His plan and timing that He has just for you.
