I am sitting here in my house thankful for the air conditioner that is running, keeping my house at a cool 72 degrees. It is about 100 degrees outside and a heat wave is rolling through my home town. Just a few days ago it was a cool 75 degrees with the nice cool breeze flowing through the trees. These heat waves remind me of times of trials where we stress out with worry and we are sweating not knowing what the outcome is going to be.
The heat pounds on us like a hammer with the feeling of being completely uncomfortable. We stay inside as much as possible and run to find shade wherever we can. Our struggles seem to go the same way. They stretch us and push us beyond our boundaries making us step out of our comfort zone. Pain ensues through the emotions and we wonder what happened to the cool breezy days at 72 degrees.
Through these trials we run to find shade wherever we can, but that shade is not always as cooling as we think it can be. We try to temporary dull the stress and the pain we feel through temporary moments of satisfaction. Maybe that is alcohol, or food, or even shopping. Whatever may be the choice, if it isn’t God that you run to as your shade, it will not cool you in the long term.
I am often guilty of going to things of this world to make me feel better, especially through my own heat waves. I have to constantly remind myself that the joy and the feeling of contentment that I long for through my struggles is only possible by surrendering my problems at Jesus’ feet. It is a hard thing to do when our society today promotes the idea of doing whatever we want, whatever makes us happy right here and right now.
Christ allows us to go through our own heat waves so that we can grow and build our character to be more like Jesus. If we can remember that God will always use bad things for good than that should put some hope into our hearts knowing that God always fulfills His promises.
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” – Luke 1:45
So when you are going through a tough situation remember to turn to Christ for your comfort, for He is our refuge, our Savior, our Comforter. The things that give us temporary satisfaction just end up enslaving us to the things of this world.
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—from violent people you save me.” – 2 Samuel 22:2-3
If you are going through a heat wave of your own I pray that you cling on to God’s strength and you turn to Him for comfort, and if you need additional prayer please reach out to us so that we can pray for you.
